When there is a minor electrical trouble at home, some homeowners think twice about hiring professional help. Some think they can well manage it especially if they have a bit of background on troubleshooting, some because they want to save up on the costs of hiring a licensed electrician.

The San Diego Electrician’s Association (SDEA) though cautions homeowners about troubleshooting their own electrical concerns. According to the SDEA there is so much safety risks in having a non-professional handle electricity. With this they also mentioned the possibility of electrical failures that may lead to electrical fires that put people and property at risk. The SDEA says, the cost of hiring an electrician is relatively low compared to the safety and the peace of mind a homeowner can have in knowing that a licensed pro addressed their electrical issues.

So what are the dangers of Do-It-Yourself Electrical troubleshooting?

Home improvement website The Spruce said it all in one of their web posts on home improvement. In that article they mentioned that while some people may be fine with DIY home remodeling, the electrical aspect of their home renovation project is best left to the professionals.

“Even if you love doing your own home remodel work, from time to time, you will want to hire professionals. There is no shame to this at all. Pros do this work every day. Jobs that require a steep learning curve for you are second nature to them. Not only that, you do not have enough time to do everything. Do it yourself electrical work is different from painting or flooring, though. Power is involved. Even when you think you know what you're doing, you might get shocked. Combining amateurism with a cavalier attitude can be a dangerous thing.”

Fair warning

Third-Party Service Ratings Website Angie’s List also came up with a warning for homeowners who are planning to undertake electrical jobs by themselves.

“Many homeowners are capable of replacing light switches, installing ceiling fans and other basic wiring jobs, but safety experts warn do-it-yourselfers against dabbling in most elements of household electricity. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, home-based electrical systems cause nearly 55,000 fires a year, resulting in more than 500 deaths and 1,400 injuries. Electrical fires cost $1.4 billion a year in property damage.”
